One of my favourite food experience involves savouring rainbow Chinese dim sum in Jakarta. It was in Crystal Jade Palace restaurant in Grand Indonesia Mall – an authentic Chinese upscale restaurant founded 20 years ago. It is now spread across 21 cities in 10 countries.

It is as much about the experience leading up to it as it is about the delicious dim sum.

Lucky for us, we had a Chinese friend along to guide us through. Ranging from black, white, pink, orange and yellow – the rainbow dim sums were meant to entice from the start. – each of the colors representing different meat ranging from pork, chicken and beef. I picked up my chopsticks trying to balance it with my right hand and my Chinese friend warned me not to cross the chopsticks. “It’s a serious offence”, she said.

Under her guidance, I pricked the dim sum with the chopstick and I sipped the soup when it flowed out of it. Then dipped the dim sum of the sauce and fried onion mix and gulped it in a single shot. Just how the Chinese would do it.

It was mouth-watering, to say the least.

  7. I won’t deny I have seen these colourful dimsums before. But that doesn’t make them less devouring. Would definitely try it out when I am in Jakarta next time. Learnt about a rule while handling chopstick. I have been committing that offence from too long 😉

  8. They look delicious. When I was living in Xiamen, China, I found something similar — a Taiwanese restaurant chain offering different coloured soup dumplings. But the fillings were the same, so I think you win on this one…
