Hiking on the volcano…
Mount Hibok-Hibok, also called the Catarman Volcano, is a stratovolcano and one of the active volcanoes on Camiguin Island in the Philippines.
A stratovolcanic mountain is made up of many layers and is conical and steep. Plan your vacation to Hibok-Hibok next time you are touring the Philippines to witness one of nature’s most phenomenal creation.

A popular hiking destination, Mount Hibok – Hibok is located at an elevation of 1,332 metres (4,370 feet) with its base diameter at 10 kilometres. While there are six hot springs (Ardent Spring, Tangob, Bugong, Tagdo, Naasag and Kiyab), and three craters (Kanangkaan Crater, Itum Crater, and Ilihan Crater), on this mountain, there are many volcanic mountains surrounding Hibok-Hibok which make up for a stunning landscape.
Eruptions at Hibok – Hibok:
From the first recorded eruption, this mountain has erupted five times. The first recorded eruption happened in 1827, followed by one between 1871 to 1875, one between 1897 to 1902, and two between 1948 to 1951.
Hiking at Mount Hibok – Hibok:
Mount Hibok – Hibok is a very popular hiking destination among the trekkers. The multiple layers of this mountain (that are made up of hardened lava, tephra, pumice, and volcanic ash) offer challenging trails for hikers from around the world. To visit this mountain, you are required to get a permit from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources office in Mambajao. As you make your way to the summit, the altitude gain is quite rapid with very little sun cover which makes the hike a little treacherous. But the surrounding views make up for the tough ride up the summit.

As you reach the top, you can see the mossy crater of the volcano provided it’s a clear, sunny day. From here you can view the Bohol towards the north, Siquijor towards the south, and Surigao towards the east. The plants that grow on the blade-sharp rocks of Mount Hibok – Hibok make it look a wee bit scary. The hikers have to make their way through many palms, vines and exotic flowers which make the journey a bit more relaxing. The entire hike takes anywhere between 5 to 6 hours depending on your physical and mental fitness levels.

This sounds like an amazing hike. I’d love to give it a try. I’ve hiked a dormant volcano before, but it wasn’t a very pretty location.

Looks like a great place to visit. I love getting outside and exploring. If I were to travel overseas the best way would be with a tour group or a company that can provide me with plenty to do when I’m in the area such as you suggested with Triphobo.

I am planning to travel more in 2018 so I think it is really exciting that there is a platform like ‘Trip Hobo’ that helps you plan your favourite trip ideas for free! I always thought of the Philippines as being quite ‘beach like’ so it was lovely to see that you could also go hiking here. I bet that is amazing for clearing the mind too.
